Wei-Shan, also known as momo, is an assistant professor at Wageningen University. His re-search focuses on designing urban infrastructure transition pathways that facilitate circular re-source management in the urban environment. He combines (bio)technology insights and ur-ban digital twins to simulate the implementation of circular technologies in urban environment and the required infrastructure transitions. His work addresses three resource streams, namely urban rainwater reuse, domestic food waste valorization and commodity plastic recycling in the AMS projects like RainOasis and Bin2Bean.
A concrete example is the BGIS tool his team creates for the city of Amsterdam to plan nature-based solutions (NbS) at a high spatial resolution in urban spaces with the aims to maximize the multifunctionality of NbS (see here for more information). BGIS stands for blue-green infra-structure (BGI) and geo-information systems (GIS). The tool facilitates not only the planning of NbS but also supports the design of economic viable NbS implementation plan when aligned with the planning of renovation of subsurface urban infrastructure.
In addition to research, he is committed to educating the next generation of urban engineers and technologists. He mentors postdoctoral researchers, PhD candidates, Engineering Doctorate students, and Master's thesis students at AMS who are tackling urban challenges. Moreover, he actively contributes to teaching within AMS-MADE, focusing on providing insights into future career perspectives in the field. He believes that cities should and could plan their urban transitions in a more comprehensive and adaptive way to prepare for highly dynamic climate and global changes, and he has found the same vision in the city of Amsterdam where he makes concrete steps forwards together with inspiring stakeholders.

““I envision cities to become the most resilient and adaptive resource producers and I want to contribute to guiding a smart and inclusive transition towards this vision””
