Exploring science and technology at Marineterrein
The Marineterrein, a hub for research and development in Amsterdam, brought together scientists, researchers, and the curious public to delve into the world of science and technology during Weekend van de Wetenschap (Weekend of Science). The Marineterrein was brimming with exciting activities: you could unleash your creativity by pimping your old clothing, tantalize your taste buds with insect sushi, participate in cool workshops and witness incredible demonstrations. The event captivated a diverse audience, spanning from local community members to the upcoming generation of city makers.

3D Printing Workshop
AMS Institute organized a 3D printing workshop. This workshop provided children and their families with a hands-on experience that merged science, technology, and creativity.

The participants were given the opportunity to create their own 3D prints, with help of our researcher Mariet Sauerwein. The workshop began with inviting the children and their families to make their own 'paste' using a special recipe. To achieve the desired consistency, precision was key, and attendees diligently measured ground oyster shells and seaweed, learning about the chemistry of materials in the process.

After mastering the art of paste preparation, the young participants were then entrusted with filling a syringe with their self-made mixture. With these tools, they could bring their imaginations to life by crafting their own 3D prints. This interactive experience served as a hands-on introduction to the boundless possibilities that technology and science offer for the future.

Inspiring the Next Generation
AMS Institute, along with other organizations at the Marineterrein, seized the opportunity presented by the "Weekend van de Wetenschap" to inspire and engage the next generation of engineers, innovators and practical implementers of innovation for the city. This was particularly exemplified by our collaboration with ROC Weekend College Zuidoost who provided their students with an exciting trip to innovation hotspot Marineterrein. At AMS Institute we provided them with a glimpse of the endless possibilities that science and technology hold for the city and their personal careers and ambitions. Our hope was to ignite their passion for these fields and inspire them to consider careers in the field of urban innovation, either theoretical or practical translation of it.

“Our focus during ROC Weekend College’s visit to Marineterrein was to spark the students' curiosity in science and technology, hoping to inspire learners from all walks of life and empower them to see their valuable potential in shaping our cities. It was a heartwarming experience!”

Connecting with the Community
Furthermore, during Weekend van de Wetenschap, AMS Institute aimed to provide neighborhood residents and interested individuals with a unique "kijkje in de keuken" (a peek into the kitchen) of our institute. We wanted to give people a chance to gain insights into the workings of AMS Institute and experience firsthand the innovative and collaborative spirit that defines our institution.

A Celebration of Science and Innovation
In conclusion, Weekend van de Wetenschap at Marineterrein truly celebrated innovation for the city. We and our partners at Marineterrein were honored to be designated as a "hotspot," reflecting the remarkable array of activities and demonstrations that unfolded at our hub for research and development. As we look to the future, we remain committed to inspiring and engaging the next generation of scientists, engineers and practice-oriented implementors of innovation. We think, connect and act.

What we do

Cities, as we know them today, have a need to transform its systems on a metropolitan scale, to become more livable, resilient, sustainable and just, but also to offer good economic stability.
